6. Fernando Guerra
Location: Lisbon, Portugal

"Fernando Guerra has a firm following, numerous interviews, and international acclaim. Just last year, he was announced as the winner of the Exterior category at the Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards for his photograph of the House for Elderly People in Portugal, by architect Francisco Aires Mateus. His latest award is only the most recent on a growing list, and the awards are well-deserved. Guerra has an eye for these pristine white buildings and captures their expertly-crafted planes with such acuity, you're compelled to see if the building has any flaws, specifically his images of the Aires Mateus' House in Leiria." Between heaven and earth: A residence in Melides, Portugal

"On the Grândola crest, the house is designed in the balance between a courtyard house, with a protected core relating to the sky, and an opening to the distant ocean view. The topography is modeled, to protect it from the access road, and release the view. The perimeter delineates the internal lodgings and its transitions. High volumetric spaces, occupied by elements that define functions and atmospheres." (Aires Mateus architects)

"Built around a central terrace looking out towards the Atlantic, the house includes three bedrooms, a kitchen with adjoined living room area, and a swimming pool, while an additional living room and two storage areas occupy the lower floor. The house was designed as one seamless space, with the central terrace functioning as a common area out to which all rooms have an opening – another feature that is typical of traditional Mediterranean houses. In a contemporary twist characteristic of the work of Aires Mateus, the building’s four main volumes are trapezoidal in shape which subtly distorts their proportion, making them look bigger and longer than they actually are.

The house appears austere and monolithic from the outside; yet this is cleverly balanced out by the subtle use of curved shapes and the overall sense of transparency found in the interior. Bright, open spaces (cleverly placed within the rather unorthodox form sketched out by Manuel Aires Mateus early on in the creative process) offer generous views over the surrounding nature and the pool, creating a sense of tranquility and meditative calmness – qualities that were part of the brief given by the client. Other notable characteristics include the camouflaged triangular fireplace in the kitchen area, the marble-clad shower area concealed behind a wall in the master bedroom, and the conch-like doorway on the lower floor which opens out into the forested hills." Best new private house
Geneses House, by Isay Weinfeld

"In the São Paulo neighbourhood of Morumbi, this family home effortlessly blends indoors and outdoors in characteristic Brazilian style. Designed by Isay Weinfeld, it is spread across three floors. Staff quarters and a car park are on the lower ground; the family’s sleeping areas and guest bedrooms are on the first; and the main living areas, gym and relaxation room are on the top floor. The interior is clad in reclaimed wood, and large glass openings create a glimmering light and open the main living spaces onto a garden and pool."

"The Architectural Photography Awards, hosted by Arcaid Images, have announced the winner, runner-up and shortlisted images for this year’s best architecture photos. A distinguished panel architects and editors that included Catherine Slessor, Eva Jiricna, Zaha Hadid, Ivan Harbour and Graham Stirk were asked to look beyond architecture and into composition, atmosphere and scale to ultimately judge four categories of images: Interiors, Exteriors, Sense of Place and Building In Use. Their selections reflect this vision admirably.

The competition aims to draw attention to the expertise of the architectural photographer, translating the sophistication of architecture into a readable two dimensions to explain and extol the character, detail and environment of the project. The experience of architecture for the majority of people is via images, reads a statement by Arcaid Images, the architecture itself is the focus and the image regarded only as the medium.”

Fernando Guerra was shortlisted in the catergories "Interiors" and "Buildings in use" with two projects.
