Pedestrian bridge over Ribeira da Carpinteira, Covilhã | João Luís Carrilho da Graça

Pedestrian bridge over Ribeira da Carpinteira, Covilhã, Portugal (2003 - 2009)

"The sinuous and segmented design of the bridge winds above de valley, along a distance of about 220 m. The central bay takes the perpendicularity to the line of the valley. The other two sections are inflected and oriented towards their anchoring points. The connection between the two points is no longer the shortest distance between them. The tensioned geometry of its layout interferes with visual orientation and with the perception of dominating heights of “Serra da Estrela”, on one side, and with the vastness of Cova da Beira on the lower side."

“Alvaro Siza: The Function of Beauty” | Best Architecture Books of 2009 - By Norman Weinstein ArchNewsNow

"Carlos Castanheira, Álvaro Siza: The Function of Beauty (Phaidon, $90). A coffee-table tribute that may be the definitive book on the sadly underrated Portuguese genius. Acutely sensitive to site, and relentlessly experimental in the vein of an unstoppable Modernism, Siza is an architect for the ages. Impeccable photography throughout, particularly of his masterpiece, the Ibere Camargo Foundation Museum – a building of the same noble majesty as the Kimball or Guggenheim. Siza contributes some spare (though helpful) commentary. Fernando Guerra’s photography fills in the gaps and inspires the quick purchase of a ticket to Lisbon." www.archnewsnow.com

Souto de Moura latest project

The Casa das Histórias Paula Rego was designed by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. The building makes use of certain aspects of the region’s historical architecture, which is here reinterpreted in a contemporary way. It can be immediately recognized thanks to its two pyramid-shaped towers and the red-colored concrete used in its construction.
The land and trees which previously existed at the site are incorporated as fundamental elements, while four wings, of varying heights and sizes, make up the building. The building itself is subdivided into rooms which lead into one another and are laid out around the higher central room which houses the temporary exhibition. The building’s interior has 750 m2 of exhibition space, on top of the technical and service areas, and is decorated in neutral shades and paved with the blue-grey marble of Cascais. The building also houses a shop, a café which opens onto a verdant garden and an auditorium with 200 seats.
The building’s design is fully in keeping the artist’s wishes, and it was Paula Rego herself who was responsible for the choice of architect. It meets all the requirements for a museum and its various functions, without forgetting the need to give visitors a warm welcome.

Álvaro Siza Documentation Center

Álvaro Siza Interview by José Salgado - The HOUSE in Roberto Ivens | To talk about a house is not simply to refer to the dimensions of its rooms or to carefully describe the relationships between its spaces. It is these things as well, but, no matter how rigorous this information may be, it will never be enough to achieve a satisfactory portrait of the thing that which is the most relevant when we speak about houses: those moments in life when they are, or were the protagonist.

GEO Magazine June issue

About opening the latest issue of GEO - When, 24 years ago, at the age of 16, I started to become interested in photography, I didn’t want to photograph houses, but the people who lived in them. I only wanted architecture to serve as the stage for the short stories I would tell little by little when I would return from a trip, or after a simple day of picture-taking in Lisbon.

The architecture of photography by Manuel Graça Dias

As is known, it took quite a long time before photography gained its own independent status following 1839 and the first daguerreotypes reproducing “portraits” in front of the photographer (to the delight and surprise of especially those who had, secretly and mythically, always wished to be permanently captured on canvas through the painter’s “genius”)

Urban Design in Ponta Delgada, Açores | Risco arquitectos

The intervention has encompassed the city's long, coastal avenue from the São Brás Fort to the São Pedro pools, its main objective being the building of a new passenger boat terminal. As a consequence of the planning options for redevelopment and enlargement of the Ponta Delgada port and surrounding area, a restructuring programme of the port installations was drawn up separating the merchandise transport and industrial fishing zones from recreational areas. New infrastructures include a recreational marina, a new ocean pool, a new boardwalk, a car park, an event pavilion, shops and restaurants. The newly built landscape contrasts a more complex morphology with the regularization imposed by the Avenida Marginal in the middle of the last century. This sinuosity allows for greater situational variation along the coastline and new relations between the buildings and the sea. The landscape modifications together with the expansion of leisure and commercial activities are expected to constitute a more lively and worldly context for the city's seafront. Contrary to current practice in Portugal, an attempt has been made to show that there is always a margin for "design" in large infrastructure projects.

Fernando Guerra in View Pictures

On Siza...

One of Siza’s projects that has affected me the most is the Anyang pavillion, 30km south of Seoul in South Korea.

When we travel to the other side of the world, we can’t postpone a session due to poor weather or insufficient conditions. We have to create the images with no excuses. Thus, during the summer of 2006, I went to Anyang to photograph the small pavilion built on an open square carved into the mountain, and I was greeted by a week of incessant rain. It was one of my first projects for the studio and I couldn’t nor wanted to make excuses for an incomplete or insufficient piece of work. Filled with anxiety, I did what I had to do: I took pictures...
