 Are there great buildings that do not photograph well? There are buildings that are more easily photographed than others. Not because they are necessarily better designed, but because they seem to display themselves well, as if they knew how to work the camera as a fashion model does. And there are others, which, although beautiful, don't work as well, whether because of the surroundings, the weather or its scale.  Sangue Jovem de Peter Asmussen com encenação de Beatriz Batarda “Sangue Jovem junta três amigas de infância, sem filhos, e que perante a inevitabilidade do envelhecimento, da doença e da solidão, procuram uma possibilidade de redenção. A elas junta-se um jovem que quer ser ator, cheio de certezas e fome de viver, que logo se torna vitima da sua própria voracidade. A noite apresenta-se como um jogo de suspensões e adiamentos de revelações, entre o que é segredo e o que é falta de memória, resolvendo-se por fim como manda a vida, de forma repetitiva.  Project House in Leiria, Portugal Architect Aires Mateus & Associates By David Cohn The Lisbon-based brothers Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus push their residential designs out of the realm of the ordinary toward the surreal and dreamlike. In one project, they arranged the living room furniture of a beach house on a floor of deep sand. In another, a renovated winery, they suspended the volumes of the bedrooms over the living space like geometric stalactites. And in this project for a young family outside the small city of Leiria, they created the perfect archetypal form of a house, straight out of a Monopoly game box or a fairy tale. An apparently solid volume wrapped completely in white plaster — pitched roof and all — sits on the green plinth of an extended lawn, sharply profiled under the Portuguese sun (...) |

 Prefabs are easier on the earth than most residential homes, but a handful of architects are pushing eco-smart prefabrication to a whole new level of sustainability by Mimi Zeiger In July 2008, a summer tainted with the early rumblings of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the Museum of Modern of Modern Art in New York opened Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling. The exhibition chronicled the prefabricated house in modern architecture, and it included several homes commissioned by the museum and set up on an empty lot on 54th Street. A MoMA show often represents the summing up of an architectural movement, and Home Delivery was no exception. However, it was the global economy that proved the de facto capstone (if not the nail in the coffin) to the trend. By the time the show closed that October, the housing market was in free fall. "Modern prefab lives fast, dies young, leaves good looking corpse," mused green architect and expert Lloyd Alter on TreeHugger at the time. And by mid-2009, Michelle Kaufmann, designer of the Glidehouse-an iconic modular home positioned as the poster child for the burgeoning prefab lifestyle-shut down her company, citing plunging home values (along with the closing of the factories that made her houses) as a key reason for bowing out. |
